Media Fusion Converts to Solar

May 31, 2017

Huntsville-based Media Fusion, is the latest local business to install solar panels and reduce its energy consumption through the North Alabama Buildings Performance Challenge. Media Fusion’s new 50-kilowatt solar system was installed on its south-facing roof. These 147 panels can produce up to 5,850 kilowatts a month and will offset more than 80 percent of the company’s power usage.

“We made the switch to solar because we know it is a smart way to save money. The environmental aspects of solar are important and it is just also good business for our operations to be more efficient,” said Tim McElyea, CEO of Media Fusion. “This Buildings Performance Challenge helped us understand how energy efficiency is the right decision for Media Fusion.”

Vulcan Solar Power, based in Birmingham, Ala., installed the system and Huntsville Utilities interconnected it to the Tennessee Valley Authority Wednesday, May 31.

Media Fusion is the sixth business to join the North Alabama Buildings Performance Challenge. The challenge started in 2016 and supports the Department of Energy’s goal of helping businesses save energy, invest in new technology and create American jobs. The North Alabama Buildings Performance Challenge is a collaborative effort between Avion Solutions, Inc., the Energy Huntsville Initiative and Energy Alabama. To date there are almost 10 million square feet of participating building space.

“We have identified more than $50 million of ‘low-hanging’ savings potential in Huntsville alone,” said Daniel Tait, CEO, Energy Alabama. “By ‘low-hanging,’ we mean projects with two-year payback or less. That’s money that could be reinvested into creating jobs or products and services. When it comes to energy efficiency, Alabama is far behind the country and even its peer states in the Southeast. The Buildings Performance Challenge is an effort to shed light on this issue and help local companies capture their share of savings.”
